7 TIPS TO CHOOSE THE BEST SUN CARE PRODUCTS FROM ATOMA ®

With the ever-expanding array of sun products available today, it is difficult to know which one to choose. Here are a few things to consider to help you choose the best atoma® product for your needs.

  • Choose an appropriate SPF
  • Protect yourself against UVA and UVB rays
  • Pick a water-resistant sunscreen for sports or pools
  • Consider ease of application
  • How to preserve your sunscreen
  • Do not neglect after-sun care
  • How much sunscreen to be fully protected?

CHOOSE AN APPROPRIATE SPF

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is a measure of protection against UVB rays from the sun. The higher the sunscreen SPF, the more protection it provides from UVB rays. However, it is worth knowing that for anything above SPF 30, these gains are minimal:

  • SPF 30: 96.7% of UVB rays are blocked
  • SPF 50: 98% of UVB rays are blocked
  • SPF 60: 98.3% of UVB rays are blocked

We recommend you to choose a product with an SPF of at least 30.

Warning: A higher SPF does not provide longer protection!

Regardless of the SPF, sunscreen must be reapplied every two hours, when outdoors, even on cloudy or cold days, and after swimming or sweating a lot.

PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST UVA AND UVB RAYS

Make sure the sunscreen also protects against UVA radiation.

Filters are active ingredients contained in sunscreens that protect skin against UVA and UVB rays from the sun. There are two types:

  • Synthetic (or chemical) filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, octisalate, and avobenzone) transform UVA or UVB rays, rendering them harmless. Often, more than one chemical filter is required in a single product to obtain proper protection against all UVA and UVB rays.
  • Mineral filters (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) form a reflective barrier on the skin’s surface. They offer protection against UVA and UVB rays alike.

To ensure your sunscreen provides adequate protection against both UVA and UVB radiation, look for the words “Broad Spectrum” or the UVA logo on the label.

PICK A WATER-RESISTANT SUNSCREEN FOR SPORTS OR POOLS

Opt for a water-resistant product for the swimmers and sports enthusiasts in the family.

The water resistance of the sunscreen is indicated on the packaging: either 40 or 80 minutes. But remember, any time you wipe your skin with a towel, you remove part of the product and reduce its efficacy. So, it is important to reapply the product even if you haven’t yet reached the water resistance limit.

CONSIDER EASE OF APPLICATION

Consider how easy the product is to apply.

Sunscreens come in various forms: creams, lotions, sprays, sticks, and others, each with its pros and cons. For example:

Creams and lotions are useful for large surfaces. Lotions are runnier, and don’t leave an oily residue the way some creams do, which makes them a good option for the face too.

Sprays are convenient for protecting hard-to-reach parts of the skin but be sure you’re out of the wind when you apply it. Never spray sunscreen directly on the face. Instead, spray it on the palms of your hands, then spread on face.

Sticks are handy for applying sunscreen to the face, as they reduce the risk of getting the product in your eyes. When using a stick to cover large surfaces of skin, make sure you rub the product in thoroughly with your hands so you don’t leave any parts unprotected.

Gels can be a good option for hairy skin (chest, legs, scalp).

No matter which form you prefer, don’t forget your lips! To protect your lips, use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every hour when you are outdoors.

HOW TO PRESERVE YOUR SUNSCREEN

Protect your sunscreen from extreme temperature.

To prevent sunscreens from deteriorating too fast, always store them away from sources of heat. Do not leave them in the car.

DO NOT NEGLECT AFTER-SUN CARE

Aloe Gel is great for after-sun care since it moisturizes the skins, cools it and helps to prevent peeling. It can also help heal a sunburn, by applying it after a cold shower as it may minimize the inflammation.

Also, since sunburns can get you dehydrated, drink plenty of water.

HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN IS NEEDED TO BE FULLY PROTECTED?

No matter which product you use, apply it regularly and generously.

Even the very best sunscreen will not protect you properly if you don’t apply enough of it. It takes about 7 teaspoons (35 mL) of cream or lotion to cover an adult’s entire body:

  • 1 tsp for each arm and leg
  • 1 tsp for the front and 1 tsp for the back of the torso
  • 1 tsp for the face

Remember to apply sunscreen on these often-forgotten areas: your hands, the tip of your nose and ears, the back of your neck, and the top of your feet.

Sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours, because its protective effect diminishes over time in the sun. Always reapply after swimming or partaking in an activity where you sweat a lot.

We have implemented health and safety solutions to help maintain social distancing for the protection of our valued patients, our staff, their families and our community.

We have installed plexiglass at our front counter and at each pharmacist station, including between each pharmacist. We have placed hand sanitizer stations at the entry way, front counter, each pharmacist station, and in each conference room. We sanitize all high frequency touch surfaces including counter tops, door handles and our waiting room regularly.

Please sanitize your hands upon entry, and follow the arrows around to the pharmacist station and front counter. Exit the other door as indicated. Please maintain 2m distance as much as possible from other occupants in our premises. We are limiting the number of patrons in the store at any one time (see posted notice at entry door).

Please respect the spacing in our waiting room. We have provided some chairs side-by-side in case you require an attendant to assist.

We are now giving immunizations by appointment. Please call ahead to book your time.

  • We have returned to regular supply of medications, though may need to limit fills due to continued shortages.
  • We always have a pharmacist available by phone to answer any questions you may have during our regular store hours.

Protecting Our Nation’s Drug Supply

To our valued patients,

We thank you for your continued support throughout these unprecedented times. Our staff has been overwhelmed by the number of patients that have thanked us over the last few weeks. We know that the wonderful sense of community here on the Sunshine Coast is what is going to get us through this time.

Our Pharmacy Team would like to clear up some misconceptions from the Media regarding ‘dispensing fees’. Howe Sound Pharmacy is following the recommendation from our Public Health Officials to only dispense 30-days of medication at a time in order to avoid critical drug shortages and to be able to maintain a constant supply of medications as needed for all patients. This of course creates triple the work over the next 3 months. However, we as health care professionals believe it is our duty to provide the best possible service to all of our patients while following the public safety orders from our Public Health Officials, and to ensure the continuity of the drug supply for our community.

All medications in Canada have a Pharmacy dispensing fee, and that helps maintain an independent pharmacy like Howe Sound Pharmacy. We’d like to introduce you to the dedicated health care professionals that are here to serve you throughout this pandemic.

  • Catherine, Michelle, Tamara, Liane and Mary answer the hundreds of phone calls that come in daily.
  • Our Pharmacy Assistants: Amy, Cynthia, Josh, Johanne, Ivy, Daniel, Kim and Rick fill prescriptions and deliver them to patients all day long. *Please take advantage of our ‘FREE’ Delivery service for Medications and all Over-the Counter items.
  • Our Technicians: Aurora, Steph and Sarah check the accuracy of all prescriptions throughout the day.
  • We have 4 dedicated Pharmacists, with 3 of them on staff every day, to help patients navigate their health care and the health care of their family members; Chris, Eric, Christine and Cindy.

Contrary to popular belief, the government has provided ‘no relief’ to Pharmacies during this pandemic. We respectfully ask that during this pandemic everyone understand the necessity of 30 day dispensing and know that when the Public Health Officials remove their current recommendation – we will return to regular dispensing guidelines.

Please know that if you are having financial issues due to the pandemic, we will do everything in our power to keep your prescriptions as affordable as possible. If this is the case, please call Eric or Chris to discuss options moving forward. We will do our best to get back to you within 48 hours.

Starting Monday March 23rd, we’ll be implementing our Health Safety Protocols to help maintain social distancing for the protection of our valued patients, our staff, their families and our community.

ORDERING: Please CALL US FIRST so we may serve everyone safely and efficiently, as follows:

  • Call Us First to place a New or Refill Prescription order & over-the-counter requests 1 to 2 days ahead please. If you have an Urgent Prescription – let us know.
  • Have your Doctor fax or phone in new prescriptions, and Call Us First before coming in to pick up.
  • We will only be giving out a 1 month supply of chronic medication at a time to limit the possibility of shortages.
  • There will also be a limit of 1 puffer / nasal spray / eye drop / insulin products per visit for supply reasons.
  • We will always have a Pharmacist available by phone to answer any questions you may have over the course of the next few months.

PAYMENT: Payment by credit card when you order is strongly recommended. For cash or debit cards, you’ll of course be invited into the Pharmacy, but if you can, please use a credit card over the phone.

  • Medications will either be delivered or brought out to your vehicle with very limited exceptions.
  • Take advantage of our FREE DELIVERY SERVICE!
  • We can also DELIVER TO YOUR CAR! Park in front at the ‘Designated Pickup Time’ – then call again and we will bring your prescriptions and over-the-counter items out to you – please have ID ready. We can answer questions or counsel at the same time, and let us know if you wish to speak to a Pharmacist who will be happy to answer your questions.
  • If you have complex issues, then we will want you to come into the pharmacy to let us help you with your issues, prescriptions or any other needs.

ENTRANCE TO OUR PHARMACY:

  • Access to our Pharmacy will be limited to an as needed basis – with ‘no’ reduction in service for anyone.
  • We’ll have a sign at our front door asking you to call us from your car or outside the door to determine whether we can help you without having to come in for service. *If you don’t have a phone, just knock and someone will be out to see you shortly.
